COST OF ATTENDANCE
WHAT IS COST OF ATTENDANCE?
The Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate designed to help students determine what it may cost to attend Gogebic Community College (GCC) for an academic year. The COA (sometimes referred to as a “student budget”) is not a final bill but an estimate of educational expenses.
The Financial Aid Office (FAO) reviews enrollment each semester after the Add/Drop period ends and adjusts a student's COA if needed. This may mean the initial aid offer could be prorated based on actual hours being taken.
The COA is based on full-time enrollment, residency, and is made up of direct and indirect costs:
-
-
- Direct costs are the expenses that are billed to the student by the college. These expenses include tuition, fees and campus housing, if applicable.
- Indirect costs are expenses a student may incur but will not pay to the college. Indirect costs vary from student to student and may include books, transportation, and other elements found below.
-
WHY DO WE HAVE A COST OF ATTENDANCE?
Federal laws require colleges to establish a COA for each student receiving financial aid. GCC uses the Student Aid Index (SAI), as calculated by the information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a student's COA, to determine the student's financial need.
By comparing the Cost of Attendance to the student’s Student Aid Index (SAI), the FAO is able to assess student need.
-
-
- The amount of financial aid that you receive as a student cannot exceed GCC’s COA.
- Financial Need is determined by your COA minus your
Student Aid Index (SAI). - COA - SAI = Financial Need
-
2026-2027 COST OF ATTENDANCE - Full year (fall/spring)
The annual Cost of Attendance is based on living arrangement, residency, and full-time enrollment (30 credits) for two semesters fall and spring. Individual programs or coursework may have additional fees associated.

Food and Housing |
A students housing status is determined by their dependency status on the FAFSA. Therefore, we assign with parent/relative status to dependent students and off campus status to independent students. Campus housing notifies the FAO of students with signed on campus housing contracts and those students are assigned the on-campus status. Allowance is determined utilizing the following categories: o Dependent student residing at home with parent or relatives: a reasonable housing allowance as determined by the institution and estimated food costs for three meals per day using . o On campus students: allowance is based on actual cost (as determined by the institution) and estimated food costs for three meals per day. o Independent students residing off campus: a reasonable housing allowance as determined by the institution and estimated food cost for three meals per day. Housing Status: Notifying financial aid about a change in your housing status is important because it can affect your COA and the amount of financial aid you may be eligible for. We assume your housing status based on your dependency status in your financial aid record: dependent students are generally assumed to live with their parents, while independent students are considered to have their own living arrangements. To update your housing status, please email FAO@gogebic.edu. |
