Keeping our History, Moving to the Future
In 1937 the Mt. Zion chalet was a log cabin structure at the top of the service road. Lift tickets were a nickel a day! The city of Ironwood was the original owner of the ski hill, Ray Smeeth ran it for a while, then the Rotary Club ran it for many years. Following the Rotary Club, it went back to the city of Ironwood until Gogebic Community College took it over in 1968.
The chalet building opened in 1970, the same year that the Ski Area Management (SAM) program began at GCC. The chair lift was added the summer of 1979 and in 1980, the chalet was moved to its current location on the hill. Currently, the chalet is 53 years old, with a total square footage of 1,568 sq. ft., and is not ADA compliant. With your assistance, we can make the necessary updates to keep Mt. Zion running long into the future.
Proposal
Located on the GCC campus in Ironwood, Mt. Zion ski hill provides an immersive, hands-on laboratory for GCC’s nationally acclaimed Ski Area Management (SAM) Program. The GCC SAM program is one of only two associate degree programs in the U.S. and the only one with its’ own operating ski hill. The Mt. Zion Education and Training Center will replace the current building (which is not ADA compliant and is 53 years old) to provide on-site classroom space for our SAM program; lab area to host continuing education classes to the ski industry; provide training/teaching space for community youth programs; and provide a venue to host events that bring visitors and revenue to our community.
