The Financial Aid Office at Gogebic Community College is here to assist you every step of the financial aid process.
Review the following information to start your financial aid application.
Federal Student Eligibility Requirements
The federal government is a primary source of financial aid for many college students. Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible for federal aid:
- Have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Be admitted and enrolled to a degree program. Students must enroll at least half-time and be working toward a degree or combined degree/certificate. Students enrolled in a certificate-only program are not eligible for federal aid, including loans.
- Demonstrate financial need through their financial aid application materials. (Some loans and scholarships are available to students without need.)
- Be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or eligible non-U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security Number (unless from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, or the Republic of Palau).
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress toward their degree program.
- Use aid only for educational purposes.
- Not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on any federal educational loan. Review Pell Grant and Loan History at https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/review-and-correct/sar-student-aid-report.
- Enroll for coursework that is accepted for credit by the degree-granting program.
-
- If a student enrolls in coursework that does not count toward their degree, it cannot be used to determine enrollment status.
- Exception: if the course(s) are eligible remedial courses or the course(s) have been approved by the college/department to count toward the student’s degree progress.
-
- Students must attend all classes for which they enroll. Failure to attend class may result in the adjustment of aid.
NOTE: Financial aid will not pay for ENG090, ENG091, MTH090, MTH091 or classes not in your program of study. Also, financial aid will not pay for the following programs: Certified Nursing Assistant, Cosmetology Instructor, Nail Technician, Emergency Medical Services Specialized Study, Early College and Ski Lift Maintenance/Operating Training.
Financial Aid Application Process
Step 1: Request an FSA ID. If you do not already have one request an FSA ID. This will allow you to electronically sign your FAFSA and access personal information on the Federal Student Aid website. If your parents’ information is used in applying a parent will also need to create an FSA ID.
Step 2: File the 2023-2024 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after October 1, 2022. The filing deadline for maximum aid consideration is March 31, 2023. When completing the 2023-2024 FAFSA, we recommend that you use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer your tax information directly from the IRS onto your FAFSA. The GCC Federal School Code is 002264. The 2023-2024 FAFSA is based on 2021 income and tax return information.
Step 3: Receive and review your Student Aid Report (SAR). Within 5-7 days of submitting your FAFSA you should receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). Review it carefully and respond to any item that must be resolved; be sure that the information on the SAR is accurate.
Step 4: Respond to request for additional documentation required to finalize your financial aid application. Check your financial aid status through MYGCC frequently to stay informed. You should respond immediately to avoid any delay in the process.
