Nursing Program Information

FAQ's

  • Gogebic Community College application for admissions to the college.
  • Nursing program application - Applications are accepted October 1- July 1 every year. Acceptances are sent out April - August 1 every year. 
  • Students must obtain a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or higher in the following pre-requisite courses:
  • BIO 250 Human Anatomy – 4 Credits
  • ENG 101 English Composition – 3 Credits
  • PSY 101 General Psychology – 4 Credits
  • Students must also:
    • Have a valid Nurse Aide Certification
    • Place in Math 104 /108 or complete Math 103/105 with a “C” or higher
    • Have a minimum of a B- in BIO 250
    • Complete COL 102 with a C or higher
    • Complete all other pre-requisite General Education classes with a C or higher

  • BIO 250 and 251: Must have a minimum grade of B- or higher. Must be from within the past 7 years.
  • ENG 101: Must have a minimum grade of C or higher. Must be within the past 5 years.
  • Math: Placement scores must be within the past 2 years. Courses must be within the past 5 years.
  • PSY 101, COL 102, Humanities, Communications: Minimum grade of C or higher. No time limits.
  • NUR courses: Must have a minimum grade of B- or higher. 
  • Mandatory Workshop will be held in person the week before the fall semester start.
  • Students must complete online Moodle based orientation tasks by August 1st of each year.
  • BIO 251 - Human Physiology – 4 credits
  • One Humanities course
  • One Communications Course (ENG 102, SPE 101, SPE 105)
  • Have a current unencumbered LPN License
  • Apply for the LPN to RN Advanced Standing track.
  • Place in Math 104/108 or successfully complete Math 103/105 with a grade of C or Higher
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in the following pre-requisite classes:
    • English Composition (ENG 101) or Technical English (ENG 105)
    • General Psychology (PSY 101)
    • Human Anatomy (BIO 250)
    • Human Physiology (BIO 251)
  • Minimum grade in BIO 250/250 must be a B- or higher
  • Complete COL 102 with a C or higher
  • Complete all other general education pre-requisites with a grade of C or higher.
  • First Year classes are held in Ironwood or Houghton.
  • Second year classes are held in Ironwood. Students can attend via video conference. Labs/sims are held in Ironwood (typically 1 day/week).
  • Clinicals are held in the Houghton and Ironwood regions. Medical Surgical clinical locations may include Hancock, Ironwood, Larium, Baraga, Ontonagon, Ashland and Woodruff. It is not guaranteed that these locations will have a clinical site each semester. Students may go to specialty clinical rotations in Marquette and Lac Du Flambeau. 
  • An associate degree in nursing (ADN)
    • 2-year, 64 credit degree
    • Graduates qualify to take the NCLEX RN and work as a Registered Nurse.
    • 64 credit programs
  • A Bachelor’s degree in nursing is a
    • Minimum of a 4-year, 120 credit program.
    • Graduates qualify to take the NCLEX RN Exam and work as an RN.
    • Includes additional credits of General Education.
  • Once you pass the NCLEX exam, your license can be transferred to other states allowing you to work in those states.
  • GCC’s program is approved by the Michigan State Board of Nursing and is designed for testing in Michigan. You can test in other states but should check with that State Board of Nursing to determine there are any additional testing requirements.  (Examples include but are not limited to – Wisconsin requires that office transcripts are submitted to the State Board).   
  • Students must pass a criminal background check
  • Students must pass a drug screen.
  • Students must meet immunization/clinical guidelines:
    • MMR – series of 2 injections or a titer for each area showing immunity
    • Hepatitis B – series of 3 injections or a titer showing immunity or a declination form
    • Varicella – series of 2 injections or a titer showing immunity
    • Tdap- adult booster
    • Tetanus – current 10-year booster
    • Tb – two step tb test or 2 annual tests
    • CPR certification – BLS or Healthcare provider level
    • Flu – immunization for the current flu season (due by October 1)
    • COVID 19- Up to date Pfizer or Moderna immunizations or an approved facility specific waiver form (student will follow clinical facility policy).
