Karen Balyeat
Nursing
Karen Balyeat is one of the nursing faculty at Gogebic Community College. This year is her twelfth year teaching here and she absolutely love teaching nurses! It is great to see those “aha” moments when students understand a concept or successfully perform a new skill! Karen teaches in all 4 semesters of the program so she is able to see the students learn and grow throughout their education which is so exciting to watch.
She began her nursing career at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Marshfield Wisconsin where she received a diploma in nursing. Karen received my Bachelor of Science (BSN) from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and then attended Indiana Wesleyan University where she received her Master’s in Nursing Education.
Karen has worked as an RN in many areas of nursing including Labor & Delivery, Post-partum/newborn, Emergency Department, Medical-Surgical department, Intensive Care, Outpatient Surgery and Outpatient infusion therapy. She continues to work as a Nursing Supervisor at the hospital which allows her to stay current with the ever-changing healthcare environment. She also gets to work with many of my previous students which is fun!
Karen is a big proponent of ongoing education and is an instructor for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
She loves spending time with her family traveling or camping as much as possible. When Karen is at home, she enjoys taking her dog for walks and working in her garden.
