Phi Theta Kappa

In the tradition of Phi Beta Kappa, its four-year counterpart, Phi Theta Kappa, is the only nationally recognized honor society for two-year colleges. The pledge of membership embodies four goals—service, scholarship, fellowship, and leadership.

The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. Established in 1918 by Missouri two-year college presidents, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1.3 million members and 1100 chapters located in 50 united states, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges and in 2000 the Association of College Honor Societies recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the general scholarship honor society serving associate degree granting institutions.

PTK Award

Active membership in Alpha Rho Chi requires a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better on 12 completed college-level credits toward an associate’s degree. Membership not only places you among the academic elite, but also affords you special benefits and unique scholarship opportunities open only to Phi Theta Kappa members.

 Community College

PTK at Gogebic Community College

There are two types of membership at Gogebic Community College: General Membership and Par Excellence Membership.

In order to qualify for a General Membership, a student must: ● Maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.5

  • Have completed at least 12 credits above the 100 level
  • Pay a one-time fee of $65.00

With the general membership, students only have to pay the fee to obtain their membership. There are no other service requirements. Students can choose their own level of involvement, which is ideal for people who are too busy to commit to being involved.

In order to qualify for a Par Excellence Membership, a student must:

  • Maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.5
  • Have completed at least 12 credits above the 100 level
  • Pay a one-time fee of $65.00
  • Earn at least six (6) stars through volunteering, service, and fundraising.

Stars can be earned by attending events, participating in fundraisers, and also by completing the Five Star Competitive Edge program online ( 5 Star Program Video ). Typically, we issue 1 star per on campus service event or 1 star per hour for an off campus volunteer community service effort. Students can also earn 1 star for every $50 raised through a fundraiser. If a student completes the entire Five Star Competitive Edge program, they earn 2 stars.

All of our events are listed in our chapter’s Quick list. This list is produced in a spreadsheet each semester. We will add a variety of campus events, such as: ACES seminars (the tutoring center will host seminars on various topics), Student Services club events, membership meetings, Speaker series, fundraisers, Quiz Bowl, foundation functions, etc. Next to each event, we have a column that details the amount of star credit for attending. Students may apply for consideration for current individual community service efforts directly to the PTK advisor – qualification and start distribution is at advisor discretion.

Keeping Track of Stars: We keep track of stars using paper applications and participation charts corresponding to event sign-in sheets and community service volunteer forms.

Each member who joins our chapter has a paper application filled out and filed alphabetically in our 5-star binder. We get a new binder every school year in order to keep track of all of the students we recruit each year.

Along with the paper application, we have a chart that is used to keep track of each person’s stars. Our chapter secretary takes the sign-in sheets from each event and records who went to what event. Every event will have a sign-in sheet where students fill out their name, phone number, and e-mail address. Copies of the sign-in sheets are given to the chapter secretary and stored in chapter binders for reference.

After a student obtains their six stars their membership status transfers to Par Excellence. Only Par Excellence members are given the opportunity to wear the Phi Theta Kappa stoles at graduation commencement. Each student invited to join PTK will be giving information on the different levels of chapter membership along with their application.

We attempt to persuade members to obtain a Par Excellence membership. Par Excellence students will receive more detailed letters of recommendation from our adviser, in addition to being a resume booster to be involved in volunteering/service. Furthermore, any member who serves as an officer automatically earns three of their stars.
