General Statement of Duties:

A nursing faculty member is responsible and accountable for ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives of the Gogebic Community College Nursing Program. Faculty will be required to evaluate student performances, generate necessary program reports and accreditation documentation, motivate and advise students, and participate in program and department planning. In addition to instruction, the nursing faculty member has three roles: collaborator, director of learning, and role model (NCBSN, 2008). These roles are particularly important in the program's concept based curriculum, where students engage in active learning daily in order to meet their educational goals. Commitment to this style of instruction is necessary. There is an expectation that clinical and instructional competency will be maintained.

Primary responsibilities include assisting in course instruction and coordination, program review and improvement, maintain scheduled office hours, participation in department and institution meetings. Ability to work effectively with others in a rapidly changing team environment is required. A commitment to professional development and learning is needed as nursing education continuously changes and grows. The individual will have good listening skills, have the ability to understand the needs of others, maintain a high work ethic and integrity, and will be flexible.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Teach courses as assigned in accordance with the description published in the Catalog and Department Course Outline. It is recognized that the methods, procedures, and interpretations of various instructors may differ.
  • Demonstrate the attributes and responsibilities of the Certified Nurse Educator Competencies.
  • Assist in curriculum development and instructional advancement in the nursing profession.
  • Assess the needs of students in the program and help coordinate the development of a plan to address these needs.
  • Assess program effectiveness and provide documentation of methodologies utilized to meet student, course, and program outcomes.
  • Assist in program evaluations and content review.
  • Attend and participate in all regularly scheduled faculty meetings unless excused by the appropriate administrative officer or unless classes conflict.
  • Make himself/herself available for student consultations.
  • Meet all scheduled classes, consultation hours, and final examinations as scheduled.
  • Maintain attendance records of students and submit required reports to the Registrar's Office.
  • Prepare and submit grade reports on schedule to the appropriate administrator.
  • Complete requested reports on student athletes and submit them to the Athletic Director/appropriate administrator.
  • Participate in program textbook orders and adoption decisions.
  • Maintain and work cooperatively with clinical and theory instructors on on-campus and off-campus instructional sites.
  • Serve on institutional committees.
  • Maintain quality assurance to remain compliant with all required agencies.
  • Participate in student recruitment activities.
  • Advise students as assigned.
  • Evaluate students' progress in the classroom and clinical setting. Assessment and evaluation of learning is carried out using various methods: questioning techniques, quizzes, student presentations, writing assignments, examinations, skill demonstrations, other assessment instruments.
  • Courses may be team taught. Instructor is responsible for coordinating with teammates to develop and maintain course outlines, lesson plans, and manage content. The course syllabi should convey the goals and outcomes of the course, reflect the curriculum adopted by the program for the course, establish and communicate challenging expectations for students, and explain the relationship of those expectations to the grading and assessment process.
  • Promote higher order thinking skills in the classroom/clinical setting.
  • Provide motivation to students through enthusiasm for the subject matter, developing a climate for learning within the classroom, providing relevant and current course content, and having an understanding of student differences and various learning styles.
  • Be accessible to students both in and out of the classroom and/or formal office hours. Strive to help students be successful.
  • Listen to students and encourage them to actively participate in the learning process.
  • Demonstrate respect, care, and empathy for students.
  • Encourage students to believe they can learn successfully. Encourage student growth and celebrate student success.
  • Maintain a sense of humor and humanity in the classroom.
  • Respond to requests of academic area and/or faculty leads, department chairs, directors, committee chairs, records office, etc. in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Maintain current knowledge in subject area(s) of instruction.
  • Maintain current knowledge of research in the area of teaching and learning.
  • Awareness of current trends/issues related to the profession.
  • Other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, balance, stoop, kneel, twist, and reach. The employee frequently is required to use a computer, and equipment related to patient care. The employee must be able to meet the Technical Standards for Nursing. The employee must frequently lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, mid-range, far-range vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to detect sounds related to bodily function using a stethoscope, and detect audible alarms generated by mechanical systems.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works near video display. This position requires some day travel and some overnight trips. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position does require some evening hours.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing is required.
  • Current Michigan Nursing License or eligibility for MI license within 30 days of employment. May need to obtain additional licensure for clinical assignments in neighboring states.
  • Three (3) years full-time acute care clinical experience with direct patient contact.
  • Maintains own license, immunizations, CPR or other requirements and able to provide evidence of current status.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience in Community College or University settings.
  • Experience with simulation utilizing nursing education.
  • Familiarity with and use of collaborative/active learning techniques.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening assignments at clinical sites.
  • Experience with curriculum development.
  • Experience with electronic health records.
  • Background knowledge of classroom and student assessment.
  • Experience with clinical learning, student supervision and teaching methods is desired.
  • Current Train the Trainer Certification or ability to obtain certification.

Electrical Line Mechanic Certificate Program/Commercial Driver's License - Full-time Faculty

Gogebic Community College seeks a full-time faculty member to be the primary instructor for a 32-credit Electrical Line Mechanic (ELM) Certificate Program and to provide instruction to a Commercial Driver's License Curriculum at Gogebic Community College (GCC). Our ELM program is a one-year certificate program offered over fall and spring academic semesters.

This position offers a unique opportunity for the right candidate to lead our program in to a renewed and promising future. The successful candidate should not only have strong instructional skill-set, but he or she should also be willing and able to help develop and implement a sustainable future vision for the program. We are a school passionate about student success and seek a candidate who shares our belief in having top-notch quality programs for our students. GCC is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Certificate in Electrical Lineman Technology, Associate's degree preferred in a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Qualifications as a Safety Trainer.
  • The ability and know-how to work with students of varying ages and backgrounds.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • Three years driving and one year as driver trainer.
  • Excellent driving record.
  • Comply with Part 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of DOT, state, and federal laws and regulations related to truck drivers, driving safety, and health practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of work experience as a supervisor in the line-worker profession.
  • Two years of experience as a trainer in a line-worker training program and commercial driver's license program/preparation program.
  • An understanding of the community college philosophy and mission.
  • Previous teaching experience at the community college level.
  • Familiarity with course development/curriculum processes.
  • Literacy in word-processing, spreadsheet and presentation software (i.e. Microsoft Office) desirable.
  • Substation and system operation experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Mathematical Skills - Ability to perform basic math computations including adding, subtracting, multiplying, and averaging all units of measure. Ability to compute fractions, percentages, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and/or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems and manage conflict effectively and appropriately.
  • Computer Skills - Skill in the use of computers, MS Office Suite, and commitment to use of technology in instruction.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including day, evening, and weekend hours at multiple sites.
