The Gogebic Community College Foundation hosted the 16th annual 'Celebration of Achievements' banquet on October 20, 2011 in the David G. Lindquist Student Center. Each year the Foundation selects alumni, college faculty/staff, board members and friends of the college to recognize for their commitment to GCC. The four honored for their outstanding contributions to GCC in their careers and to the community were Margaret Ann "Peggy" Malovrh, Class of 1977, Distinguished Alumnus; Jim Milakovich, Class of 1969, Distinguished Foundation Board Member; Don Fortune, Distinguished Foundation Board Member, and Dave Coleman, Class of 1964, Outstanding College Employee.
Peggy Malovrh attended GCC and graduated with honors from the pharmacy program at Ferris State University. She received her Pharm.D. degree in 1993. She is currently the Clinical Pharmacy Supervisor and Residency Program Director at Sparrow Health System, a 733-bed tertiary care hospital in Lansing, Michigan. She also serves as an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Michigan, Ferris State and Wayne State Universities. Although she has traveled to more than 25 countries, Peggy still thinks the Gogebic Range is the most beautiful place on earth.
Jim Milakovich graduated from GCC in 1969. While at GCC he was proud to be a Samson basketball player and a member of two NJCC Championship teams. He graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration. He continued taking education courses to further his professional banking career. He currently serves as the Vice President/Senior Lending Officer of the First National Bank. In addition to his involvement in community groups, Jim has served on the GCC Foundation Board of Directors since 2002, including past President from 2008 to 2010.
Don Fortune attended Flint Junior College until drafted to serve in the U.S. Army for service in the Korean Conflict. He then attended the University of Michigan-Flint College. He began his banking career with Michigan National Bank. He was then named the President and CEO of First National Bank of Calumet/Lake Linden, MI. He served as the Executive Vice President and CEO of First National Bank of Ironwood and was President at the time of his etirement. Don served as a GCC Foundation Board Member from 1989 to 2000. During his time on this board, he was the co-chair of a local fundraising drive and raised $550,000 for the David G. Lindquist Student Center on the campus of GCC. Following his retirement he was an integral part of the chartering of the Gogebic Range Bank.
Dave Coleman attended GCC and graduated from Northland College with a Bachelor of Science degree. He began his career at GCC by teaching Physical Education at Camp Ojibway in Marenisco, Michigan. He was also a Teacher Aide at Camp Ojiway and an adjunct instructor on the main campus of GCC. In 1989 he became the Gogebic Off-Campus Coordinator in Iron River, Michigan. He also started Off-Campus College Evening Classes in Hancock, Houghton and Calumet, Michigan. In 1994 he became the On-Campus Evening Supervisor and Assistant Manager of the David G. Lindquist Student Center. He was named Athletic Director in 2006 and Residential Manager of Campus Suites in 2008. David retired from GCC in 2009 and continued as the part-time Campus Suites Manager until his full retirement in 2010.
