Criminal Justice

Employment

Job opportunities for criminal justice majors include the areas of police officers, detectives, sheriffs, FBI agents, special agents, security, drug enforcement agents, etc. Educational requirements vary by position. The GCC Criminal Justice program includes a combination of theoretical, practical, and supportive courses. Individuals already employed in the corrections area can increase their skills and prepare for supervisory positions. Courses included in this program would allow an individual to qualify for the 15 semester credits mandated by the State of Michigan as a prerequisite to a Civil Service Test for a Corrections Officer in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Job Outlook

A more security-conscious society and growing concern about drug-related crimes should contribute to the increasing demand for police services. Employment of police officers, detectives, and special agents is expected to increase faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2005 due to the increase in the Nation’s population and police protection needs. Correction officer employment is expected to increase much faster than average as additional officers are hired to supervise and counsel a growing inmate population. Expansion and new construction of correctional facilities is also expected to create many new jobs.
