Nature of the Work

Physicians examine patients, obtain medical histories, and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. They diagnose illnesses and prescribe and administer treatment for people suffering from injury or disease. Physicians counsel patients on diet, hygiene, and preventative health care. Those in private practices may handle or oversee the business aspects of running an office.

Most M.D.'s specialize in medical, surgical, or other specialties.

Job Outlook

Physicians held about 539,000 jobs in 1994. About two-thirds were in office-based practices, including clinics and HMO's, and one-quarter were in hospitals.

Physicians have among the highest earnings of any occupation. According to the American Medical Association, the median income was $156,000 in 1993. The middle 50% earned between $108,000 and $240,000. Earnings vary according to speciality, the number of years in practice, geographic region, professional reputation, etc.

The Program

The minimum requirement for entry to schools of medicine is three years of college, with most giving preference to those with bachelor's degrees. The program at Gogebic includes the math and science courses necessary for the study of medicine. Ths program is designed to transfer to universities for bachelor's degree completion.
